This workshop offers an unforgettable opportunity to photograph one of Europe's most iconic raptors at exceptionally close range in dramatic Nordic light. Working from heated purpose-built hides positioned at the edge of ancient Scandinavian pine forests, this trip is designed for photographers seeking intimate, powerful images of wildlife in its natural habitat.

Our base in the small, peaceful village of Kalvträsk provides the perfect setting for a focused photographic adventure.

Surrounded by pristine landscapes and rich autumn wildlife, this is an experience that combines comfort, excitement, and exceptional photographic potential in one of the world's premier locations for Golden Eagle photography.

There is no better place to photograph Golden Eagles than from the heated purpose-built hides, located close to the White Mountains nature reserve.

These exceptional facilities offer photographers access to the most magnificent raptors in their natural winter habitat, with ancient old-growth forest and dramatic mountains providing the perfect backdrop for your images.

The wilderness here creates the ideal environment for capturing Golden Eagles and a diverse array of boreal wildlife.

The timber hides are specially designed for wildlife photographers, by Wildlife Photographer of the Year, Conny Lundstrom,  feature either log burner or gas heaters for comfort in Nordic conditions, toilet facilities, and space for a small group.

With strategically positioned photo holes, you'll be able to capture intimate close-ups of eagles and other species, while different angles allow for spectacular landscape shots featuring eagles against the mountain backdrop.

What Makes This Workshop Special

November represents a magical time in Northern Sweden. The landscape transitions toward winter, with the possibility of early snow creating dramatic contrasts and beautiful compositions.

The low Nordic light provides long, golden hours perfect for photography, and the wildlife is highly active as animals prepare for the harsh winter ahead.

The combination of exceptionally close encounters with Golden Eagles, comfortable heated hides in prime locations, the stunning autumn-to-winter transition, and the genuine wilderness setting makes this one of Europe's most sought-after wildlife photography experiences.

These are completely wild Golden Eagles moving freely through their natural territory—authentic, powerful, and utterly compelling subjects.

Working in a small group of just three photographers per hide ensures everyone has ample space, unobstructed views, and the personal attention needed to capture truly exceptional images.

Photography Equipment

The close-up nature of these hides means you'll be using shorter focal lengths than you might expect—100-400mm lenses are ideal for frame-filling eagle portraits, while 500-600mm lenses work beautifully for more distant landscape shots featuring eagles against the mountain and forest backdrop.

Primary Species

Golden Eagle

The undisputed star of this workshop. November brings these magnificent raptors down from the high mountains as they search for food during the onset of winter.

You'll witness and photograph Golden Eagles in their natural environment, capturing them as they land, feed, interact, and display their incredible power and grace against stunning autumnal backdrops.

Red Fox

The Arctic winter coat of the Swedish red fox is truly spectacular, and these beautiful animals are regular visitors to the hide areas. Their rich russet and white winter pelage provides stunning photographic opportunities, particularly against snow and autumn foliage.

Additional Wildlife

The boreal forest ecosystem supports remarkable diversity. Bullfinches, Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Grey-headed Woodpeckers, Willow Tits, Jays, Red Squirrels, and occasionally Goshawks all frequent the area. Common Ravens, Magpies, and various finches ensure constant photographic interest even during quieter moments.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 - Monday 10th November: Arrival

We will meet at the designated airport in Northern Sweden (flight details will be provided upon booking). From here, we'll transfer to our accommodation in Kalvträsk, which will be our base for the duration of the trip. The transfer takes approximately 1-2 hours through beautiful Swedish countryside.

After settling into your accommodation, we'll have dinner together and a comprehensive briefing covering what to expect over the coming days, hide safety and etiquette, photographic techniques for eagle photography, and camera settings recommendations. You'll have time to prepare your equipment and ask any questions before our first hide session.

Day 2 - Tuesday 11th November: First Golden Eagle Session

After breakfast, we'll depart for the hides around mid-morning. You'll be positioned in one of Conny's purpose-built hides, each offering different perspectives and backgrounds for Golden Eagle photography. The hides are equipped with heating (log burner or gas heater), toilet facilities, and comfortable seating to ensure your comfort during extended sessions.

We'll spend the full day photographing Golden Eagles and other wildlife as they visit the area.

November light in Northern Sweden is exquisite, with long golden hours providing beautiful, soft illumination throughout much of the day. We'll return to our accommodation in the late afternoon for dinner and the opportunity to review and discuss the day's images.

Day 3 - Wednesday 12th November: Full Day Eagle Photography

Following breakfast, we'll return to the hides for another full day of photography. Depending on weather conditions and eagle activity, you may work from the same hide as Day 2 or move to a different location offering varied perspectives and backgrounds.

Golden Eagles are most active during these autumn days, and it's not uncommon to observe multiple birds over the course of a session. The dramatic landscape, combined with the possibility of early snow, creates stunning photographic opportunities. Red Foxes in their winter coats frequently visit, and the variety of woodland birds ensures there's always something to photograph.

Your guide will be available throughout the day to provide assistance with camera settings, composition advice, and insights into eagle behaviour to help you anticipate and capture those perfect moments.

Day 4 - Thursday 13th November: Final Hide Session

After breakfast, we'll head out for our final full day in the hides. By this stage, you'll have developed a feel for the rhythm of the location, understanding when eagles are most likely to appear and how to position yourself for the best compositions.

This final session provides one more opportunity to capture the incredible wildlife of the Swedish boreal forest. Whether you're seeking that perfect eagle portrait, hoping to capture a fox in pristine light, or wanting to photograph the smaller woodland species, this day offers a final chance to achieve your photographic goals.

We'll return to the accommodation in the late afternoon for our final dinner together, where we can share highlights from the trip and review our favourite images from the week.

Day 5 -Friday 14th November: Departure

After breakfast, and time to pack, we'll transfer to the airport for your departure home. Carrying with you unforgettable memories and stunning images of Swedens magnificent Golden Eagles.
